Dôr, Thermal Sensor

Dor is a new-generation, battery-powered thermal sensor, which uses heat signatures to accurately and anonymously count foot traffic. Unlike most high accuracy people counters, Dôr does not require professional and costly installations. With a peel-and-stick application, Dôr can be mounted and counting foot traffic in no time.

Some limitations to a thermal people counter is that it does not track demographics which some retailers may want, the flow of customers around your store or occupancy.

Break Beam (Infra-red)

Break beam counters are highly popular, cheap and have a minimal installation requirement. While cost is on its side, this will have to be weighed against the variable accuracy of beam counters.

When visitors enter side-by-side,  the beam might only be broken once and will affect the overall outcome. Trying to maintain a level of accuracy required to provide good decision making could be affected.

Wi-fi Traffic Counter

Wi-fi sensors work by counting the devices that  connect to their in-store Wi-Fi network. Some Wi-fi sensors have the advantage of giving extra insight to where your visitors spend their time in your store and whether they are a returning customer.

The disadvantages are that they are only effective if a visitors phone has their wi-fi set to discoverable, or allows for automatic connection. This brings into effect a largely inaccurate way to count foot traffic.

*Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals are used primarily for anonymous foot traffic counting and analytics purposes. However, it's worth mentioning that privacy concerns have been raised regarding the collection of such data.

Video Camera

Video camera's are highly accurate people counters and the count can be verified. The other plus is the information on your visitors such as age and demographic. The trade off for this can be the Personally Identifiable Information that is captured. Anonymity is a valuable and comforting aspect to offer your visitors.

The other consideration is the potentially high price tag. Video camera systems need a site inspection and a professional installation, with the more than likely chance of maintenance that will require down-time.

Bluetooth Footfall Counter

Foot traffic counters can be equipped with BLE beacons, which are small, low-power devices that continuously emit Bluetooth signals. These signals contain unique identifiers that can be detected by nearby smartphones and other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

Bluetooth sensors can be inexpensive depending on the ability of the sensor, simple to set up, portable and able to count repeat visitors.

Along with their Wi-fi counterpart, Bluetooth sensors are only effective if the visitors phone has Bluetooth turned on their device. This leads to inaccurate counts, which in turn, nullifies the legitimacy of calculated conversion rates.

AI Recognition Software

There is no shortage of talk on artificial intelligence and it doesn't escape the people counting space. AI programs can be cheaper as a plug-in software to your existing camera system. No installations or maintenance makes this accurate counter an attractive choice.

The negatives come in the form of needing an existing video capture system in your space. If you unlucky not to have one, then this will be added to the cost. Secondly, it can creep it to the arena of collecting personal or sensitive information, but very handy if you want to find out the demographics of your visitors.
